A 5-minute primer

What is Ayurveda?

A 5,000-year-old system of medicine and lifestyle from the Indian subcontinent. Less a religion, more a grammar of how to live so body and mind stay in tune with the seasons, the day, and each other.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is the sister science to yoga. If you've ever rolled out a mat or sat in savasana, you've already touched its world, the two grew up together as one continuous practice for body, mind, and breath. Most people meet this tradition through yoga first; Ayurveda is the half of the practice you may not have been formally introduced to yet.

The word Ayurveda (आयुर्वेद) literally means "the knowledge of life", ayur (life) + veda (knowledge). It treats the body as a living ecosystem, not a machine of separable parts. Health emerges when food, sleep, movement, breath, relationships, and the seasons are in conversation with each other.

Where modern medicine often treats symptoms one at a time, Ayurveda asks why, what's out of balance upstream? What in your routine, your diet, your environment is feeding the imbalance? Practice is preventive first, corrective second.

The three doshas

Everything, bodies, foods, weather, emotions, is read through three energetic patterns called doshas. Each of us carries all three; usually one or two run the show. Knowing your dominant dosha is the starting point for most Ayurvedic choices.

Vata

air + ether

Movement, creativity, lightness, communication. When out of balance: anxiety, dryness, restlessness, insomnia.

Pacify with, warm food, oil, slow rhythms, early sleep.

Pitta

fire + water

Focus, drive, transformation, sharp intellect. When out of balance: irritability, inflammation, burnout, criticism.

Pacify with, cooling foods, mid-day pauses, time outdoors, water.

Kapha

earth + water

Steadiness, warmth, nurturing, endurance. When out of balance: heaviness, lethargy, stuck-ness, attachment.

Pacify with, invigorating movement, lighter food, novelty.

The daily routine: dinacharya

Ayurveda is built around small, time-aligned rituals more than big interventions. The day has a rhythm; aligning your acts with it does most of the work. A simple skeleton:

  • SunriseWake before sunrise. Tongue scrape. Warm water. Move the body, yoga, walk, pranayama.
  • Mid-morningLight, warm breakfast. Engage focused work while agni (digestive fire) is strong.
  • NoonLargest meal of the day, when digestion peaks. Eat seated, no scrolling, fully present.
  • AfternoonSustained creative work. Hydrate. Move every 90 minutes.
  • SunsetLight supper, ideally before 7pm. Walk after eating. Phone down.
  • EveningReflect, journal, read. Abhyanga (warm-oil self-massage) before a bath if time allows.
  • 10 pmAsleep. The 10pm – 2am window is when ojas (vitality) and immunity are rebuilt.

Five principles to start with

  1. Like increases like. Cold weather + cold food = more cold. Use opposites to bring balance.
  2. Strong agni is the foundation. Eat warm, eat seated, eat slowly. When digestion is clean, almost nothing else falls apart.
  3. Sleep is non-negotiable. No amount of supplements replaces an early bedtime.
  4. Move every day. Not to burn calories, to keep prana (life-force) circulating.
  5. Pause to digest experience. Unprocessed emotion becomes ama just like unprocessed food. Journal, walk, breathe, be still.
